Bangladesh Backs Lentil & Edible Oil Procurement to Stabilize Market Pre-Ramadan

The Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase in Bangladesh has recommended the approval of two separate proposals for the procurement of lentil and edible oil, aiming to stabilize the supply and prices of essential commodities as the Holy Month of Ramadan approaches.

The decision was made during the committee’s first meeting of 2026, convened today at the Conference Room of the Cabinet Division within the Bangladesh Secretariat. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, the Finance Adviser.

During the session, the committee gave the green light to the procurement of 10,000 metric tons of lentil via the national Open Tender Method (OTM). The total cost of this procurement is estimated at approximately Taka 718.7 million, with a fixed unit price of Taka 71.87 per kilogram. Submitted by the Ministry of Commerce, the proposal has selected Payel Automatic Food Processing Mills, based in Chattogram, as the designated supplier.

In addition, the committee approved the import of 13,575,000 liters of refined soybean oil through the international Direct Procurement Method (DPM). This import project is valued at around Taka 1.7847 billion, with a per-liter price set at Taka 131.47. The soybean oil will be sourced from Thailand by Prime Corp World Company Limited.

Meanwhile, a separate proposal for the procurement of soybean oil through a national tender was withdrawn following a request from the Ministry of Commerce.
