Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae are rapidly becoming one of the most promising raw materials for sustainable oil production. But before the oil can be extracted, the larvae go through a carefully controlled production process. Here‘s how it works.
Step 1: Cleaning
Fresh larvae are washed thoroughly to remove organic waste, manure, and impurities from the surface. Clean raw material is essential — it directly affects the final oil quality and prevents contamination in later stages.
Step 2: Blanching (Hot Water Treatment)
The cleaned larvae are blanched in hot water (90-100°C) for about 40 seconds. This step kills the larvae, sterilizes them, and deactivates the fat-degrading enzymes — preventing the oil from turning rancid later. After blanching, the larvae are cooled and drained.
Step 3: Drying
The blanched larvae still contain high moisture. They must be dried before pressing. Drying is typically done at 60-80°C for 12-24 hours, depending on equipment and target moisture level. Proper drying makes the larvae suitable for pressing and significantly improves oil yield.
Step 4: Crushing (Optional)
Dried larvae can be crushed into smaller particles before pressing. This step improves feeding efficiency and helps the screw press grip the material better, especially for high-oil and sticky materials like BSF larvae.
Step 5: Oil Extraction
The dried larvae are fed into a screw press or hydraulic press. The oil is extracted, and the remaining cake is a high-protein by-product. BSF oil is rich in lauric acid and widely used in aquaculture feed, animal feed, and cosmetic applications.
Step 6: Filtration
The crude oil is filtered to remove fine particles and residues. Clean, filtered oil has a longer shelf life and better appearance — ready for storage or further processing.
